Shanghai Railway Museum 上海铁路博物馆

Since Ethan likes train, we went to visit the Shanghai Railway Museum 上海铁路博物馆. Entrance ticket is RMB10 per adult. One adult is able to bring one kid along for free entry. Its official website can be found at http://www.museum.shrail.com/. Unfortunately it is only in Chinese.

Main entrance of the museum
The weather was extremely cold and winding on that day. So even though the main attraction was real life old trains in the main courtyard, we did not spend much time out in the cold. Instead we went into the warmth of the main museum building.

Some of the photos we captured out in the courtyard with the old trains.

There was even a platform for the trains to stop at. I guess since these trains are going no where, the platform is mostly meant for tourist and small kids to experience what it is like to catch and board a train through a platform.

There were various types of model of trains from different era of time.

Description of various types of trains

The inner building of the main museum was not big. There were various displays on the history of Shanghai railway. How people managed to accomplish the impossible feat and built the railroad through hash terrain, etc.

Some tunnels have to be built undersea instead of through a mountain or hill. There were variety of displays that describe how divers complete their job underwater.

One of the items displayed here was the history of the Shanghai North Railway station 上海北站. It was bombed by Japanese during the WWII. Currently this station has became this museum and main station is moved to Shanghai South Railway station 上海南站.

Apart from informative facts being displayed here in this museum, one of the main attraction for kids is the train simulator. It is a train size simulator that people could sit in it and experience how the train conductor drives the train. It has all the knobs and levers and sound to follow by to provide near train driving experience. One thing lacking though is that it lacks the rocking and movement of a train.

Overall was a great experience, more for small kids like Ethan and adults. A good place to come to on rainy day where one does not know where to go.
